A needle is a stainless steel metal part on a syringe used to inject medication into body tissue. Manufactured using a triangular cutting technique, it is very sharp and can easily pierce the skin. On the other hand, a silicone coating on the needle reduces pain and burning during injection. Generally, the gauge of a needle is inversely proportional to its diameter; this means that the larger the gauge, the smaller the diameter. To make needle diameter easier to detect, the needle shaft is colored to match the gauge. A 19- to 27-gauge needle is used for subcutaneous injections and is commonly used for injecting substances such as insulin and morphine, which require gentle, low-volume absorption. A 26- to 30-gauge needle is also used for intramuscular injections because, in this type of injection, the needle goes deeper into the body and requires a smaller diameter.
